Red-hot Sharks look to keep rolling against Coyotes
Mar 30, 2008 - 1:12 PM Phoenix (37-35-6) at San Jose (47-21-10) 8:00 pm EDTSAN JOSE, California (Ticker) - The San Jose Sharks look to continue their dominating play when they host the Phoenix Coyotes on Sunday.
Since February 21, San Jose has gone 16-0-2. The Sharks clinched Pacific Division title for the first time since 2003-04 on Friday with a 3-1 victory over Anaheim.
"I don't know how important it was, but we wanted to do it and get it over with," Sharks coach Ron Wilson said. "We were in a comfortable position, so we didn't feel any pressure. Now we've got four games where some guys need a little break."
Leading-scorer Joe Thornton did not score in the win over the Ducks, but had six tallies in his previous three contests. Patrick Marleau, Jeremy Roenick and Curtis Brown scored on Friday, while Joe Pavelski had three assists.
San Jose has gone 4-1-2 against Phoenix this season but all three losses have come in succession, including a 5-4 overtime setback this past Tuesday.
Martin Hanzal scored the game-winning goal at the 3:23 mark of the extra period after Thornton tallied his third goal of the game for the Sharks to tie the contest at 4-4 with 2:46 remaining.
Subsequently, that win is the only one for the Coyotes in their last seven games, going 1-5-1 since March 15.
Phoenix is coming off a 4-0 blanking to Los Angles on Thursday.
