Brodeur, Devils aim to clinch playoff berth

UNIONDALE, New York (Ticker) - Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils try to secure a postseason berth Tuesday when they visit the New York Islanders.

New Jersey will clinch a spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs with a win or if Washington loses to Carolina on Tuesday.

Brian Gionta, Patrik Elias and captain Jamie Langenbrunner tallied in the shootout as the Devils snapped a five-game winless streak with a 5-4 triumph over the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday.

"We needed something to get us going," Langenbrunner said. "Anytime you can get the two points, it makes it easier to solidify a playoff spot."

Brodeur made 28 saves in that one for New Jersey, which currently occupies the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference but holds just a two-point edge on the eighth spot.

A three-time Vezina Trophy winner, Brodeur is 41-26-6 with a 2.19 ERA and four shutouts this season. He now has 535 wins and 96 blankings during his 14-year career.

The Islanders, already eliminated from playoff contention, are coming off a 4-3 shootout loss to the Flyers on Saturday.

New York is 2-8-1 over its previous 11 contests.
