Penner, Marchant lead Ducks past Sharks

Sep 21, 2006 - 4:57 AM ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- If Wednesday's defensive performance is any indication of what's to come, Vesa Toskala may not want the team's starting job in goal.

Toskala made 33 saves but yielded five goals in the second period as the Anaheim Ducks posted a 6-3 preseason victory over the San Jose Sharks.

After claiming the starting job late last season and posting six consecutive wins in the playoffs, Toskala entered training camp with intentions of staving off former Calder Trophy winner Evgeni Nabokov for the position.

Toskala did little Wednesday to let the spot slip away despite letting Anaheim build a 5-1 lead after two periods. The 29-year-old Finn stopped all 16 shots he faced in the first session and made another 17 saves in the middle period.

But the Ducks unleashed 22 shots overall in the second, netting four goals in a 3:39 span after Dustin Penner opened the scoring at 9:22.

Penner began the outburst with his second of the game at 13:03 and 2003 first-round pick Corey Perry tallied 32 seconds later for a 3-0 cushion. Former Shark Teemu Selanne cashed in on the power play with 5:17 remaining in the period and Todd Marchant completed the spurt 1:59 afterward.

Marchant added two assists and 2001 fifth overall pick Stanislav Chistov also scored for Anaheim, which finished with 47 shots.

Milan Michalek, captain Patrick Marleau and defenseman Garrett Stafford tallied for the Sharks, who rested Nabokov, reigning MVP Joe Thornton and Jonathan Cheechoo, the NHL's leading goal scorer last season.
