Kiprusoff, Flames extend streak, end Red Wings' run

Nov 18, 2006 - 4:49 AM CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) -- Miikka Kiprusoff and the Calgary Flames ended the Detroit Red Wings' winning streak - and extended their own - in convincing fashion.

Kiprusoff recorded 29 saves to lead the Flames to their sixth straight win, a 4-1 victory over the Red Wings, whose run was halted at nine.

The reigning Vezina Trophy winner, Kiprusoff made 24 stops for the Flames in Tuesday's 3-0 victory over the St. Louis Blues.

"The win is the biggest thing," said Kiprusoff, who entered with the league's fifth-best save percentage (.928). "I can't lie. It's not fun to lose the shutout that late in the game, but it's the two points that count."

Kristian Huselius, Matthew Lombardi, Daymond Langkow and defenseman Dion Phaneuf scored for the Flames, who have outscored their opponents, 19-6, during their streak.

Alex Tanguay had two assists for Calgary, giving him eight in his last four games.

"We knew Detroit was on a winning streak and they've played so well defensively the past few games," Tanguay said. "It was important for us to get off to a good start."

Acquired from the Colorado Avalanche in an offseason trade for defenseman Jordon Leopold on October 7, Tanguay is starting to fit in with the Flames.

"It took a little while for me to get adjusted to the team in Calgary and maybe I was forcing a little too much earlier in the season," Tanguay said. "Now things are going well."

Daniel Cleary spoiled Kiprusoff's shutout bid on the with the man advantage with 41 seconds left in the game.

Calgary's power play, which entered only 27th in the league, went 3-for-5 against the Red Wings, who had only surrendered 12 goals during their winning streak.

The Flames netted two power-play tallies in the first period.

Huselius gave the Flames a 1-0 lead at 7:13 when he beat goaltender Dominik Hasek. Shortly thereafter, Lombardi doubled the margin when he took a pass from Chuck Kobasew from behind the net and poked the puck past Hasek.

Langkow gave the Flames a 3-0 lead just 1:11 into the third period when he took Tanguay's pass and beat Hasek to the short side. Phaneuf tallied on the power play at 13:31 of the third period for a 4-0 advantage.

Hasek uncharacteristically allowed four goals on only 25 shots.

"It was one of those games we never really showed up," said Hasek, whose 1.76 goals-against average was the league's best. "We gave up two early power-play goals. I think nobody showed up.

"I think they outplayed us overall. They were more aggressive. Our power play didn't work and their's did. They had a lot of traffic in front of me and they put the puck in the net."

Detroit defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom assisted on Cleary's tally and extended his point streak to five games. Entering with a league-best plus-18, he has one goal and five assists during that stretch.

Calgary right wing Jarome Iginla assisted on Langkow's goal and extended his point streak to seven games. He has three goals and seven assists in the streak.
