Smolinski's second goal of game sends Blackhawks to victory

Sep 22, 2006 - 3:33 AM CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Bryan Smolinski is proving to be more than just a spare part for the Chicago Blackhawks.

Making his debut with Chicago, Smolinski scored his second goal of the game 48 seconds into overtime, giving the Blackhawks a 3-2 preseason triumph over the Florida Panthers.

A throw-in in the deal that brought Martin Havlat to Chicago from the Ottawa Senators over the summer, Smolinski opened the scoring Thursday with a power-play goal at 4:04 of the first period.

After David Booth forged a 2-2 tie with just over two minutes to go in the third, the 34-year-old Smolinski - a former 30-goal scorer and veteran of 13 NHL seasons - beat goaltender Craig Anderson with a one-timer from the high slot, giving the Blackhawks the win.

Defenseman Jim Vandermeer also scored, Jeff Hamilton recorded two assists and Nikolai Khabibulin made 25 saves for Chicago, which went 2-for-8 on the power play.

Rostislav Olesz tallied and former Blackhawk Anderson stopped 28 shots for the Panthers, who rested captain Olli Jokinen, Jozef Stumpel and defenseman Jay Bouwmeester.
