Michalek's hat trick helps Sharks edge Canucks
Sep 22, 2006 - 5:21 AM SAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- Milan Michalek was not about to be upstaged by the Sedin twins.Michalek completed a hat trick with 2:03 remaining in the third period, snapping a tie and lifting the San Jose Sharks to a 4-3 preseason triumph over the Vancouver Canucks.
Drafted sixth overall in 2003, Michalek scored goals around a power-play tally by 2006 Maurice Richard Trophy winner Jonathan Cheechoo to give San Jose a 3-0 cushion. His first goal, which came 90 seconds into the contest, was scored with the man advantage.
However, the Canucks began their climb back when Jannik Hansen tallied with 12 seconds remaining in the second period. Daniel Sedin cashed in on a power-play opportunity with 8:38 to go in the third and brother Henrik scored 2:10 later to forge a 3-3 tie.
But Michalek spoiled Vancouver's hopes, converting a pass from Mark Smith for his third goal of the night.
Smith had two assists and former Calder Trophy winner Evgeni Nabokov stopped all 23 shots he faced over 30 1/3 minutes for the Sharks, who rested captain Patrick Marleau.
Each Sedin set up the other's goal and newcomer Roberto Luongo yielded two goals on 13 shots for Vancouver, which played without Brendan Morrison and captain Markus Naslund.
No one has shouted yet.
