Jagr, Lundqvist lead Rangers over Hurricanes

Nov 22, 2006 - 2:35 AM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Jaromir Jagr clearly doesn't plan on stopping at 600.

Jagr scored twice and Henrik Lundqvist made 34 saves to lift the New York Rangers to a 4-0 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes, who had their three-game winning streak snapped.

Collecting his second milestone in as many games, Jagr has 602 career goals, becoming the highest-scoring European player in NHL history as the Czech Republic native surpassed Jari Kurri's 601.

"It's a big honor to me," Jagr said. "It's probably bigger than 600 to a European player. I'm going to remember that one. Jari Kurri was a big idol for everybody from Europe. All the young guys, we looked up to him. He's the most famous guy to play in the NHL from Europe.

Everybody knew him, we followed the Edmonton Oilers. We knew he was playing with Wayne Gretzky. It's a big honor to me; it might be bigger than 600."

Two days after scoring his 600th career goal against Tampa Bay, Jagr netted his 10th of the season to give the Rangers a 3-0 lead at 13:36 of the second period when he beat goaltender Cam Ward to the short side from the left faceoff circle.

Jagr gave the Rangers a 4-0 advantage 3:11 into the third period when he cruised through the slot and redirected defenseman Aaron Ward's shot from the point past Ward, who had 23 saves.

"It's fun to watch (Jagr) day in and day out," New York's Matt Cullen said. "The things that he does that nobody in the world can do, it's fun to watch and admire."

Lundqvist, who has only allowed one goal in his last two starts, recorded his third career shutout.

"When you're working in the defensive zone, it's all about trust," Lundqvist said. "In the last couple of weeks, we're starting to trust each other more. It's very important for us that we stay focused. I think it was very important after playing a lot of games on the road to start, to play well at home because we want to win here in New York. It's the best place to be and to win."

"I think we made him look pretty good," Carolina's Erik Cole said. "I think we know the book on him and we didn't follow it."

Marcel Hossa scored his first goal of the season and Brendan Shanahan notched his league-leading 17th for the Rangers. Michael Nylander had two assists.

Shanahan extended his points streak to eight games. He has five goals and five assists during that stretch.

"They have such an offensive team," Carolina coach Peter Laviolette said. "It's hard to fall behind and expect to fight back when you get down 2- or 3-0. They have some dangerous players and they ended up capitalizing. We were a little loose defensively, and it ended up costing us."

Rod Brind'Amour had his seven-game points streak end for Carolina, which outshot the Rangers, 34-27, but was 0-for-4 on the power play.
