Frolov scores 10th goal in November as Kings beat Flames

Nov 26, 2006 - 6:10 AM LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Alexander Frolov continues to make the most of a November to remember.

Frolov snapped a second-period tie and rookie Anze Kopitar added his sixth goal of the season as the Los Angeles Kings won for just the third time in eight games with a 3-1 victory over the Calgary Flames.

After recording three consecutive multi-goal games from November 13-18, the 24-year-old Frolov set a career high with 10 goals this month and raised his team-leading total to 14, which is just seven fewer than his output in the 2005-06 campaign.

"I know people expect a lot from me," Frolov said. "I try to do my best every night. I hope it helps the team. I am playing well right now and want to keep playing well."

Calgary goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff stopped defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky's wraparound attempt by laying his stick across the goal line. However, Frolov made a diving stab at the puck, lifting it over Kiprusoff's pad with 5:47 left in the second session.

"You have to give him credit," Kings coach Marc Crawford said. "That was a goal- scorer's goal. (He) showed his goal-scoring ability. If you watch the replay, his head is right on the puck. He knows where it is and he gets it. It's a great lesson for other players."

"It's not about me," Frolov said. "But it hopefully helps other guys play well. I think we played well as a team tonight. I hope we just keep doing it. I hope it makes us play smarter."

Alex Tanguay ended a nine-game stretch without a goal with 7:50 to go in the first period when he opened the scoring for the Flames with a rebound of Daymond Langkow's backhander past netminder Mathieu Garon's right pad.

Kopitar tied the game 2 1/2 minutes later by taking Dustin Brown's cross-crease feed and easily finding the open net for his first goal at home this season.

Los Angeles added an insurance tally during a 5-on-3 power play in the third period. After Kiprusoff blocked blue-liner Rob Blake's slap shot, Kopitar slipped the puck to Michael Cammalleri for his eighth tally.

"We did a terrific job with the lead tonight," Crawford said. "Our penalty kill probably won the game for us tonight. I thought our guys went out and executed against a really good power play. That first unit of Calgary's is good as anybody in the league."

"We thought that the third period should have been ours," Calgary captain Jarome Iginla said. "They found a way to be good and we were not very good tonight. We are a team that battles and we are usually hard on other teams. Tonight, we were not any of that."

Garon made 22 saves to post his first victory since October 30 against the New York Rangers and raise his record to 4-5-2.

"I think we played awesome tonight," Garon said. "We were a much different team than we were the last two games. We killed some big penalties and it makes a difference in the end."

The reigning Vezina Trophy winner, Kiprusoff stopped 32 shots for the Flames, who yielded three goals for the first time in nine contests.

"It is disappointing to lose any time," Flames coach Jim Playfair said. "We gave up a 5-on-4 and a 5-on-3 goal. We knew exactly what they were going to do. They did a good job of working through and they got stronger as the night went on."
