Richards, Lightning end struggles against Senators
Nov 27, 2006 - 12:46 AM TAMPA, Florida (Ticker) -- Brad Richards and the Tampa Bay Lighting were tired of losing to the Ottawa Senators, so they did something about it.Richards scored the decisive goal midway through the second period and added an assist as the Lighting posted a 3-1 victory over the Senators.
Defenseman Filip Kuba had a goal and an assist and Martin St. Louis added the clinching power-play tally with 78 seconds remaining for Tampa Bay, which has won three straight games.
The Lighting had lost four consecutive regular-season meetings with the Senators dating to last season. They also were eliminated by Ottawa in five games in last spring's Eastern Conference quarterfinals.
"Ottawa (has) had our number," Lightning defenseman Dan Boyle said. "I don't think we've beaten them too many times in my four years here. It was an up and down game but we pulled through."
Johan Holmqvist stopped 22 shots for Tampa Bay, holding his ground on four power-play attempts.
"I felt pretty good," Holmqvist said. "I'm happy to play and I think we're starting to play better and better too. It's important to win at home. The biggest thing tonight was to get focused on our own game."
"That's how you win a lot of games in this league and that's with your goaltender," Lightning coach John Tortorella added. "They had some quality chances against us, but Johan stood tall. He made some good saves, even (on) some shots that were from the outside. ... We're trying to grab points here and he's done a great job for us."
Jason Spezza scored the game's initial goal and Ray Emery swept aside 15 shots for Ottawa, which failed to extend its winning streak to five games.
"We didn't get the bounce tonight like we have been," Senators defenseman Wade Redden said. "I thought we came out hard in the third. They played pretty good with the lead and we got a few chances but we weren't able to get one by them."
No one has shouted yet.
