Neal's heroics propel Stars past Canucks in shootout
Jan 5, 2009 - 7:05 AM VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Rookie James Neal netted the decisive goal in the fifth round of the shootout Sunday, lifting the Dallas Stars to a 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.Mike Modano had a goal and an assist before scoring in the bonus format for the Stars, who overcame an early two-goal deficit to post their fourth win in six games.
"Points are so big right now and we've got to do everything we can to get them," Neal said. "We didn't play well yesterday and, obviously, it showed. We came out a little rough in the first period, but like I said, we found a way to win in a shootout."
Mike Robeiro also tallied and Marty Turco made 33 saves for Dallas.
"Tonight, even though we gave up a couple early it felt like we had a better start," Turco said. "We certainly played a lot better and tonight, we capitalized on some chances. We got pretty fortunate there at the end to pull out a win."
Kyle Wellwood and Darcy Hordichuk scored and Jason LaBarbera turned aside 34 shots for the Canucks, who have lost five of their last seven contests - including a pair of back-to-back shootout defeats.
After Vancouver's Alexandre Burrows hit the side of net with his attempt in the fifth round, Neal fired a quick wrist shot past LaBarbera to lift the Stars to the win.
"I just didn't adjust very well," LaBarbera said on the shootout winner. "He just put it over my pad. It's one of those lefthanded shots over your low blocker. Most guys will tell you that's a tough play, but I just didn't adjust very well to it and he just made a good shot."
Wellwood and Dallas' Loui Eriksson exchanged goals in the second round of the bonus format, and Ryan Kesler and Modano did the same in the fourth before Neal's heroics.
Wellwood opened the scoring 2:11 into the contest and Hordichuk doubled the advantage with 4:20 left in the first period. But Modano halved the deficit with 10 ticks remaining in the opening session.
"The third and fourth lines haven't been contributing and we were relying a lot on the three best players of forwards playing on the same line," Wellwood said. "For us to get a couple of goals, it's a real boost for us."
Ribeiro evened the contest with 6:09 left in the second on a power play. He took a pass from Jere Lehtinen and fired a one-timer past Turco.
"Last night, we didn't show up so we had a lot of energy tonight," Ribeiro said. "After they scored two goals in the first period, big goal by (Modano) at the end of the period to keep us in the game. From there, we kept battling and won some one-on-one battles."
