Flames score a pair late to burn Blues
Jan 14, 2009 - 7:10 AM CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) -- David Moss and Michael Cammalleri each scored a goal late in the third period to lead the Calgary Flames to a 3-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday.Moss scored on the power play with 3:42 to play in the final session and Cammalleri sealed the win with a tally just 51 seconds later.
Calgary outshot St. Louis, 34-28, including a 15-4 advantage in the third period.
"As we know, he's (Cammalleri) a high skilled individual and he can be a game breaker," Calgary coach Mike Keenan said. "There were two important goals scored for us on the power play, and he was certainly a contributor to the power play as well as a great individual play on the second goal he scored."
Miikka Kiprusoff made 27 saves for Calgary, allowing only a goal to Dan Hinote with 3:04 remaining in the first period.
Cammalleri answered on the power play a minute later to forge a 1-1 tie.
Moss scored the eventual game-winner when his centering pass bounced off the glove of defenseman Jay McKee, who was down on the ice to block the pass. McKee got a piece but the puck was redirected and bounced past goaltender Chris Mason.
"I don't want to say we hung in there, I thought our guys played hard," Mckee said. "We had some chances to take the lead. It's unfortunate, the goal that went in, the game winner, he (Moss) certainly wasn't intending to put it on net. But teams that play well create their own luck and that's what happened."
"I think if you put the puck at the net, you're going to get some breaks," Keenan said. "If you put the puck on net, you get what I call puck action, which forces the goaltender to make a stop or a defenseman to make a decision, or even a forward. Those decisions break down from time to time or you get a break, the puck will deflect off a player and go into the net."
Mason made 31 saves for St. Louis, which ended a three-game road trip with a pair of losses.
"I don't think he (McKee) should feel horrible," Mason said. "Jay McKee would block a shot with his face given the opportunity. That's the right play to do there, it's just a weird angle with the puck banking in. It's an unfortunate bounce obviously, but he has no reason to feel bad."
Cammalleri scored his second goal of the game on a slap shot from low in the left circle. The tally gave Cammalleri 17 goals on the season and his third multi-goal game of the season.
With the win, Calgary moved within eight points of the Detroit Red Wings for second place in the Western Conference and improved to 10-1-1 in its last 12 games.
St. Louis is last in the West and has dropped nine of its last 10 road games.
