Backstrom, Wild look to continue home success vs. Oilers

ST. PAUL, Minnesota (Ticker) -- The Minnesota Wild and Edmonton Oilers have identical records, but they rarely have looked like equals at the Xcel Energy Center.

In the first meeting of the season between the Northwest Division rivals on Thursday, the Wild will aim to extend their home winning streak over the Oilers to eight games.

A major factor in that success is All-Star goaltender Niklas Backstrom, who has blanked Edmonton three times at home over that stretch.

The 30-year-old Backstrom is 9-0-0 with a 1.64 goals-against average in his career against the Oilers. The Finn has been exceptional this season, posting a 20-13-2 record with a 2.19 GAA and five shutouts.

Backstrom made 21 saves and Mikko Koivu had a goal and an assist Tuesday, leading the Wild to a 6-3 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes.

The Oilers are seeking their third consecutive win. Erik Cole notched his fifth career hat trick in Tuesday's 5-2 victory over the Washington Capitals.

With 11 goals, Cole is one of six Oilers to have reached double-digits. No Edmonton player has more than 12 goals on the campaign.
