Jones' OT goal lifts Flyers over Bruins
Feb 7, 2009 - 10:45 PM BOSTON (Ticker) -- A favorable bounce gave the Philadelphia Flyers a satisfying road victory over the NHL's best team.Defenseman Randy Jones scored with two minutes left in overtime Saturday, lifting the Flyers to a 4-3 win over the Boston Bruins, who lost despite scoring their fastest two goals since 1981.
"It definitely feels good, but first and foremost, it feels good to get the two points against the top team in our conference," said Jones, whose goal capped Philadelphia's comeback from a 3-1 deficit entering the second period. "It was an important game for us. The way we bounced back was a big step for us."
Seconds after Bruins defenseman Dennis Wideman hit the goalpost, the Flyers got a huge break as Jones' harmless-looking shot from the blue line that appeared to be headed wide deflected off Boston defenseman Andrew Ference and past goaltender Manny Fernandez.
"It bounced off my pads," Ference said. "It's one of those bounces - puck goes to the net, bounces off your leg. It's fun to score those, but obviously when it happens to your side, it's not so cool. It just hit me. No time to react."
The goal spoiled the return of Fernandez, who stopped 26 shots in his first appearance since January 8. Fernandez had been sidelined with back spasms and general body soreness.
"We didn't have the energy we would have liked to have had," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "That's fatigue. There's no doubt."
The Flyers avenged Wednesday's 3-1 loss to Boston in Philadelphia, while the Bruins dropped to 57-2-4 under Julien when owning a lead of at least two goals.
Boston also squandered a two-goal advantage in its previous game but came away with a 4-3 shootout win in Ottawa on Thursday.
"We've got 86 points, we're doing fine," Bruins All-Star center Marc Savard said. "It's just that we've got to sharpen up, and we've let a couple of leads slip lately. We'll work on that, and we have a big test coming up on Tuesday (against San Jose). We're looking forward to that."
Antero Niittymaki blanked the Bruins in relief of Martin Biron, who allowed three goals on 15 shots in the opening 20 minutes. Niittymaki recorded 22 saves.
"Well, you want to go for a full game and you want to give your team a win," Biron said. "To see the boys come back and win at a time when we're going through a tough schedule, it was a good thing to see."
Rookie Byron Bitz scored his first career goal with 1:01 left in the first period and Chuck Kobasew tallied eight seconds later to give the Bruins their 3-1 bulge.
The Flyers tied it, however, on goals by former Bruin Glen Metropolit and Scott Hartnell in the first 6:25 of the second period.
"Guys were a little rusty, but guys showed a lot of guts," Hartnell said. "Nitty came in and made some big stops for us. We got two points. We're looking to get in the playoffs."
The Bruins had a chance to win late in regulation after Niittymaki was called for delay of game when he batted the puck over the glass with 84 seconds remaining in the third period.
However, the Flyers had the best chances while shorthanded. With 45 seconds left, Jeff Carter flipped a backhander just wide on a partial breakaway.
Then with 4.5 seconds to go, Fernandez had to make a glove save on Simon Gagne's blast from the right faceoff circle on a 2-on-1 rush.
