Red Wings return to site of Stanley Cup win
Feb 8, 2009 - 7:48 AM Detroit (34-11-7) at Pittsburgh (26-23-5), 12:30 pmPITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- With the exception of leading goal-scorer Marian Hossa, the Detroit Red Wings had a lot to celebrate the last time they were at Mellon Arena.
The Red Wings will visit the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday for the first time since hoisting the Stanley Cup last season.
Hossa, who leads Detroit with 29 goals this season, did not have much to celebrate that night as a member of the Penguins. The 30-year-old Russian had a goal and an assist, but the Red Wings skated to a 3-2 victory in Game Six to secure their fourth Stanley Cup in 11 seasons.
Signed as a free agent this summer by Detroit, Hossa scored a goal and set up another Saturday to lead the club to an 8-3 thrashing of the Edmonton Oilers.
Pavel Datsyuk and defenseman Brian Rafalski also collected a goal and an assist apiece for the Red Wings, who have won three straight contests following a season-worst, five-game losing streak.
Pittsburgh, which is still two points back of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, is seeking its third consecutive victory.
Captain Sidney Crosby recorded a goal and two assists in Friday's 4-1 triumph over the Columbus Blue Jackets. The 20-year-old has notched 21 goals and 72 points this season.
