Tanguay, Flames edge Oilers in preseason tilt

Sep 24, 2006 - 3:00 AM EDMONTON, Alberta (Ticker) -- The Calgary Flames brought in Alex Tanguay to bolster an underachieving offense. So far, so good.

Tanguay scored a goal and set up another to lead the Flames to a 2-1 preseason victory over the Edmonton Oilers.

Acquired in an offseason trade with the Colorado Avalanche, Tanguay netted a career-high 29 goals last season and has scored at least 67 points in four of the last five campaigns.

The 26-year-old Tanguay opened the scoring Saturday with his first goal in a Flames jersey after taking a feed from Tony Amonte and burying a shot past goaltender Devan Dubnyk with 9:21 remaining in the second period.

Calgary added insurance just under seven minutes later, when Tanguay and Amonte assisted on defenseman Mark Giordano's power-play tally.

The two-goal cushion proved to be enough for Flames backup goalie Jamie McLennan, who turned aside 24 shots.

Edmonton's first-round draft selection in 2004, Dubnyk made 29 saves, including 14 in the middle session. Joffrey Lupul finally got the Oilers on the board with just 48 seconds remaining, tallying off a feed from Ryan Smyth.
