Blackhawks continue trip against Thrashers
Feb 11, 2009 - 12:02 PM Chicago (29-14-8) at Atlanta (19-31-5) 7:00 p.m. ESTATLANTA (Ticker) -- The Chicago Blackhawks continue an NHL-high, eight-game road trip Wednesday when they travel to Atlanta to take on the Thrashers.
Thanks to their worst defensive performance of the season, the Blackhawks saw their three-game winning streak halted with a 7-3 loss in Vancouver on Saturday. The Canucks jumped to a 6-0 lead before Chicago cut the deficit in half with three straight goals.
Kris Versteeg, Adam Burish and Martin Havlat tallied for Chicago, but a pair of goaltenders were equally as ineffective leading to the loss.
Cristobal Huet allowed three goals on nine shots before being relieved after one period by Nikolai Khabibulin, who made 13 saves while surrendering the other four goals for the Blackhawks.
Chicago is currently 4-2 on the trip and looks to clinch a winning journey with a victory against Atlanta, which is coming off a 3-1 win over Tampa Bay Tuesday.
Kari Lehtonen made 17 of his 40 saves in the third period, including a brilliant stop of rookie Steven Stamkos on a penalty shot, to propel the Thrashers to just their second win in eight contests.
Colin Stuart scored his first goal of the season shorthanded, Vyacheslav Kozlov netted the go-ahead tally early in the second period and captain Ilya Kovalchuk added his team-leading 23rd
into an empty net to put the game away.
