Green seeking NHL record as Capitals face Lightning

Feb 14, 2009 - 11:33 AM Washington (34-16-5) at Tampa Bay (19-25-11), 7:30 pm EST

TAMPA, Florida (Ticker) -- Defenseman Mike Green cannot be stopped lately.

Green will attempt to set an NHL record for blue-liners by scoring in eight consecutive games when the Washington Capitals visit the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday.

The 23-year-old Green netted a pair of goals in Wednesday's 5-4 shootout loss to the New York Rangers to extend his goal-scoring streak to seven games - tying Mike O'Connell's all-time mark set during the 1983-84 season.

"Hopefully it can keep going, but it feels pretty special," Green said. "Honestly, I didn't even realize it until a couple of days ago. I tried not to think about it before the game, but I'm pretty happy about it."

Over his remarkable stretch, Green has amassed nine goals and 16 points. Selected 29th overall by the Capitals in 2004, Green leads all NHL defensemen with 21 goals and 49 points this season.

Ryan Malone scored twice and All-Star Martin St. Louis recorded a goal and three assists as the Lightning posted a 6-4 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday.

Captain Vincent Lecavalier and veteran Mark Recchi each scored a goal and set up another and rookie Steven Stamkos also tallied for Tampa Bay, which used a four-goal first period to notch just its second win in seven contests (2-4-1).
