Red Wings look for first win of season vs. Avalanche
Feb 15, 2009 - 8:21 AM Colorado (25-30-1) at Detroit (37-12-7) 5:00 p.m. ESTDETROIT (Ticker) -- The Detroit Red Wings, one of the NHL's best this season, have struggled against the Western Conference's worst.
Fresh off their first loss in seven games, the Red Wings look to grab their first win of the season against the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday.
Detroit had its six-game winning streak snapped with a 3-2 loss at Columbus on Friday. Goals by Nicklas Lidstrom and Mikael Samuelsson erased two different one-goal deficits, but Chris Osgood had his three-game winning streak halted when he surrendered the go-ahead goal late in the third period.
The Red Wings sit two points behind San Jose, which visits New Jersey Sunday, in the Western Conference standings, but have to solve the Avalanche if they hope to pull into a tie with the Sharks.
Colorado captured a 3-2 win in Detroit December 15 and used a shootout to grab a 4-3 win at home on December 27.
The Avalanche have fallen on tough times lately, dropping four straight and eight of 10 to sink below St. Louis by two points for last place in the West.
Despite owning a 48-23 advantage in shots against the Canadiens on Friday, Colorado surrendered a pair of goals late in the third period to lose, 4-2.
Jordan Leopold and Tyler Arnason scored goals and Peter Budaj stopped 19 shots in the loss. Budaj has lost three straight and fellow goaltender Andrew Raycroft is in the midst of a personal six-game slide.
