Green aims to continue stretch as Capitals visit Panthers
Feb 15, 2009 - 8:22 AM Washington (35-16-5) at Florida (28-19-8) 5:00 p.m. ESTSUNRISE, Florida (Ticker) -- A night after setting an NHL record, Mike Green will look to match a Washington Capitals franchise record.
Green will attempt to extend his NHL record for blue-liners and tie the franchise mark for any position by scoring in nine consecutive games when the Capitals visit the Florida Panthers on Sunday.
The 23-year-old continued his torrid stretch Saturday, scoring on the power play in a 5-1 win over Tampa Bay and breaking Mike O'Connell's all-time mark for defensemen set during the 1983-84 season.
With a goal against the Panthers, Green will match the Capitals' record for consecutive games scored. A pair of players, Alan Haworth and Mike Gartner, each scored in nine straight games for Washington.
In the 5-1 win over the Lightning, Alexander Semin added a goal and two assists and All-Star Alex Ovechkin extended his point-scoring streak to eight games with his league-leading 38th of the season.
Rookie goaltender Michal Neuvirth made 31 saves to record a win in his NHL debut.
The Panthers continued their hot streak since the All-Star break Friday with a 2-1 shootout victory over the New York Rangers. Michael Frolik scored in regulation and Richard Zednik had the lone tally in the bonus format as Tomas Vokoun made 34 saves and stopped all four shootout attempts to earn the win.
Florida has won three straight and seven of nine since the six-day lay off All-Star festivities to jump into a tie for seventh place in the Eastern Conference with the Buffalo Sabres at 64 points.
