Flyers, Rangers jockeying for playoff position
Feb 15, 2009 - 8:22 AM Philadelphia (29-16-9) at NY Rangers (30-20-6), 12:30 pm ESTNEW YORK (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia Flyers will make their first trip to Madison Square Garden this season on Sunday, dueling the New York Rangers in a battle of Atlantic Division rivals.
The Flyers enter this contest one point ahead of the Rangers for fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings. Philadelphia also has two games in hand on New York for the important position, which gives home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
In their only other meeting this campaign, the Rangers netted four goals in the first period en route to a 4-3 triumph in the Flyers' season opener.
New York, however, has struggled recently. The Rangers have posted a 1-4-2 record over their last seven contests, including a 2-1 shootout loss to the Florida Panthers on Friday.
The offense has been the main concern for New York, which ranks last in the NHL with 2.36 goals per game this season. The Rangers have scored more than two goals just once over their past seven games.
The Flyers do not share that problem. Jeff Carter leads their offensive attack, ranking second in the NHL with 34 goals on the campaign.
Carter, who has recorded a team-leading 58 points this season, collected an assist in Saturday's 5-1 rout of the New York Islanders.
