Mason, Blues look to stymie Coyotes
Feb 28, 2009 - 11:16 AM St. Louis (27-26-8) at Phoenix (27-30-5), 9:00 p.m. ESTGLENDALE, Arizona (Ticker) -- The St. Louis Blues have goaltender Chris Mason to thank for their recent surge toward the middle of the crowded Western Conference.
Looking to extend their winning streak to three games, Mason and the Blues visit the struggling Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday.
St. Louis has quietly crept within three points of the eighth and final playoff spot in the conference. The Blues trail Minnesota, Dallas, Edmonton and Anaheim, who all have 65 points.
Rookies T.J. Oshie and Patrik Berglund scored just over two minutes apart in the third period to lead St. Louis to a 3-1 triumph over the slumping Stars on Thursday.
Jay McClement also tallied and Mason made 41 saves for the Blues, who have surrendered one goal in each of the last four games - posting a 3-0-1 record over that stretch.
Making his 17th straight start, Mason improved to 10-3-4 since January 19.
The Coyotes have dropped two in row - including a 4-1 loss to the Nashville Predators on Thursday.
Phoenix, which has also lost 11 of its last 14, has scored a total of three goals in its previous three setbacks.
