Islanders hand Brodeur first loss since return
Mar 7, 2009 - 11:30 PM UNIONDALE, New York (Ticker) -- Sean Bergenheim recorded his first career hat trick as the New York Islanders handed Martin Brodeur his first loss since returning from a four-month absence with a 7-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday.Bergenheim completed the hat trick by scoring into an empty net from a bad angle with 0.7 seconds remaining.
"I think maybe (Brodeur) had an off day," Bergenheim said. "We had a good game, though. I wouldn't blame him. It was just us being good today."
Radek Martinek, Kyle Okposo and Jeff Tambellini tallied in the first 14 minutes, staking the Islanders to a quick 3-0 lead. New York then withstood a New Jersey surge early in the second period to beat the red-hot Devils for the second time in as many meetings.
Two of New Jersey's five losses in its last 23 games (18-5) have come against the Islanders, who posted a 4-0 win over the Devils here on February 21.
"This team we played tonight worked hard again," New Jersey coach Brent Sutter said. "We were not ready to match that work ethic. It's hard to play this game when you are not physically involved in the game. They had seven goals against us. That tells you something. It tells you where your mind-set is. I'm disappointed."
Although they are still last in the NHL, the Islanders have played better in the last six week, going 9-8-1 since January 21 with a roster comprised of many players began the season at Bridgeport of the American Hockey League.
"We have so many guys under the age of 25," Okposo said. "It's fun to see guys like Bergy get his first career hat trick. It really brings the team together."
The victory was tempered, however, by the news that right wing Trent Hunter will miss the rest of the season with a fractured ankle.
Brodeur had allowed only four goals in winning his first four starts since returning on February 26. The future Hall of Famer remained three wins shy of Patrick Roy's NHL record of 551.
"It was unbelievable," said Islanders rookie center Mike Iggulden, who scored the first two points of his NHL career with a pair of assists. "To come in and get that many goals on Brodeur was awesome."
Brian Gionta and Jamie Langenbrunner scored in the first 4:01 of the second period - sandwiched around a goal by Bergenheim - to pull the Devils with 4-2.
However, Blake Comeau registered a power-play goal with seven minutes left in the second and Bergenheim scored again 4:20 later to extend the Islanders' cushion to 6-2.
"Whatever (Bergeinheim's) eating, I want some of it," New York left wing Blake Comeau said. "It seems like all of his goals are highlight reel goals."
Brodeur, who faced 26 shots, was pulled after the second period in favor of Kevin Weekes.
"I knew it wouldn't be all rosy," Brodeur said. "If you expect me to go out and win every game and shut down everyone, thanks for the confidence. It is not something that's going to happen."
The Devils slipped eight points behind Boston in the race for the top seed in the Eastern Conference.
