Brodeur continues run for record, tops Flames
Mar 11, 2009 - 3:53 AM NEWARK, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Martin Brodeur made 35 saves and captain Jamie Langenbrunner recorded a goal and an assist as the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday skated to a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames. With the victory, Brodeur moved within two of tying Hall of Famer Patrick Roy (551) for first place on the all-time list. He has a chance to match the mark in his hometown of Montreal on Saturday.
"It's still alive, we still have that chance," Brodeur said. "I've done all that (ticket-buying). The people I care about, I'll buy tickets for (on Saturday). Not that I don't care about the other ones, but when you get older, you smarten up about these things."
Brian Rolston and Zach Parise also scored for New Jersey, which matched a franchise record with its eighth consecutive home win.
Olli Jokinen and Curtis Glencross tallied for the Flames, who have lost three in a row and four of six.
"Three in a row is very unacceptable," Calgary captain Jarome Iginla said. "Next game at Detroit, it doesn't get any easier."
"You're always concerned when you're losing," Flames coach Mike Keenan added. "At this time of year, the tempo of the games is pretty high. We're trying to work through that part of our schedule right now."
Jokinen opened the scoring midway through the first period with his third goal in four games after being acquired from the Phoenix Coyotes at Wednesday's trade deadline. The Finn converted a pass from the left faceoff circle while standing at the right side of the crease at 10:22 for his 24th tally of the season.
Langenbrunner forged a tie at 5:10 of the second with his fourth goal in six games, beating goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff with a wrist shot from the slot while shorthanded.
"It was a great play by Whitey (defenseman Colin White)," Langenbrunner said. "Paul Martin made a great deflection of that cross-ice pass (by Calgary) to get it started, Whitey reading the play, jumping through there. I kind of just bided my time getting through there and he made a good pass. I made a good shot and it found its way through."
"Their shorthanded goal was a big goal for them," Iginla said. "We're thinking it's a power play with a chance to go up 2-0, and then it's 1-1, a huge momentum swing."
It was the 22nd goal of the season for Langenbrunner, one shy of his career high.
Rolston put the Devils ahead for good during a power play with 1:59 left in the middle session, burying a rebound on the right side, and Parise banged in the puck from the top of the crease 75 seconds into the third for his 39th goal of the campaign.
"It was a cluster in front of the net," Parise said. "I was surprised the ref didn't blow the whistle. We saw (the puck) underneath, kept swinging at it. I knocked it through the five-hole, I think, or somewhere.
"Those are the goals I've been scoring all year, from in the crease and tight around the net. You have to stick with what works."
Parise's tally chased Kiprusoff, who made 25 saves.
"That's the coach's call, and I have nothing else to say about that," Kiprusoff said. "Coaches make those calls, and I don't worry about that. I just try to win out there."
Glencross netted a power-play goal with one second remaining to cap the scoring.
