Sabres hoping to avoid third straight loss

BUFFALO, New York (Ticker) -- The Buffalo Sabres will try to avoid a third consecutive loss and gain some much-needed ground in the Eastern Conference playoff race Thursday, when they meet the Florida Panthers.

The Sabres are currently in 10th place in the East, four points behind the Panthers for the final playoff spot. Buffalo has lost five of its last seven contests.

Maxim Afinogenov and Jochen Hecht scored as the Sabres suffered a 5-2 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday.

Kamil Kreps and defensemen Nick Boynton and Keith Ballard tallied in the second period Tuesday as Florida squandered a two-goal lead in the third session en route to a 4-3 shootout loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Tomas Vokoun made 47 saves before surrendering a pair of goals in the bonus format.

The Panthers still have won four of their last six contests.
