Blackhawks rally past Red Wings in third
Apr 11, 2009 - 11:32 PM DETROIT (AP) -- The second-to-last game of the season for the Chicago Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings came down to a referee's call.Dustin Byfuglien scored on a penalty shot with 28 seconds left, breaking a tie and lifting Chicago to a 4-2 comeback win over Detroit on Saturday.
Niklas Hjalmarsson netted his first NHL goal, and Ben Eager and Andrew Ladd also scored for Chicago. Brian Campbell chipped in with two assists and Cristobal Huet stopped 21 shots.
Valtteri Filppula and Henrik Zetterberg scored for Detroit. Ty Conklin made 22 saves.
Byfuglien was hooked by Niklas Kronwall on a partial breakaway and was awarded the penalty shot by referee Brian Pochmara.
"I got hit, but I couldn't tell how hard with everything that was going on," Byfuglien said. "We got the break."
Kronwall didn't think it would be called a penalty shot.
"I didn't think I touched him that much," he said. "But, obviously, the referee was right there, and he made the call."
Byfuglien then beat Conklin with a high shot for his 15th goal.
It was Chicago's first penalty-shot goal since December 13, 2002, when Alexei Zhamnov scored against Buffalo's Martin Biron.
Ladd added an empty-netter with 10 seconds remaining.
The Blackhawks are fourth in the Western Conference and will play the Calgary Flames in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
"That's what we wanted. To go into the playoffs on a high note," Chicago defenseman Duncan Keith said.
The Red Wings are the No. 2 seed and will play either Anaheim, St. Louis or Columbus in the first round.
Detroit announced before the game that left wing Johan Franzen had signed an 11-year deal worth $43.5 million. He is second on the team with 34 goals.
"I started my career here. I had some good times here, four good years, playing with great players," Franzen said. "I really wanted to stay here."
The teams will conclude the regular season with a rematch in Chicago on Sunday.
Eager tied it at 2 with 11:07 left with his 11th goal, beating Conklin with a shot from the high slot.
Zetterberg gave the Red Wings a 2-1 lead with 1:02 remaining in the second period. He slapped in a rebound for his 31st goal.
Chicago scored just 16 seconds into the game as Hjalmarsson beat Conklin with a slap shot from just inside the blue line.
Filppula's power-play goal with 9:01 left in the first period tied it for Detroit. He put in Jiri Hudler's back pass across the crease, from the bottom of the right circle, for his 12th goal.
