Wimmer wins Pepsi 300
Mar 22, 2008 - 10:01 PM NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Scott Wimmer took the lead with 22 laps to go and had just enough fuel to win Saturday's NASCAR Nationwide Pepsi 300 at Nashville Superspeedway.Wimmer's win snapped Carl Edwards' three-race winning streak at this track.
Wimmer brought his Chevrolet home nearly six-tenths of a second ahead of Richard Childress Racing teammate Clint Bowyer to capture his first win in 58 starts and sixth for his career.
"It's unbelievable - I can't believe it's been that long," said Wimmer, whose last win came in 2003 at Pikes Peak. "I'm just excited to be here."
Wimmer's average speed of 134.095 miles per hour broke Edwards' track record of 129.949 mph set last season. There were a record-low three cautions, breaking the mark of five set last year.
Bowyer was followed by the Ford of reigning series champion Edwards, the Chevrolet of Brad Keselowski and Kelly Bires' Ford.
With his second-place finish, Bowyer, who won last week in Bristol, took over the top spot in the standings and leads Edwards by 11 points. Kevin Harvick entered the weekend with the lead but did not compete in this event.
Pole-sitter Kyle Busch had the dominant car throughout, leading a race-high 125 of 225 laps. But he got loose with 62 laps remaining while leading and clipped Bowyer's Chevrolet before traveling through the infield grass.
"Just a stupid mistake on the driver's part," said Busch, who pitted and eventually finished 16th, two laps down.
"Kyle got sideways and got into us," Bowyer said. "We were too tight after that."
Despite being a lap down, Busch battled Bowyer and Wimmer at the head of the field, trying to stay in position for the lucky dog - should a caution come out - but finally gave way.
"Kyle had a great race car and he was the class of the field," Wimmer said. "When he finally let us go, it was mine and Bowyer's race and I beat him."
David Reutimann was 15th in a Toyota and moved up to third in the standings, 91 points behind Bowyer.
There were 10 lead changes among five drivers.
