Coast junior Elgey eyes Titans NRL future
Dec 15, 2017 - 4:31 PM Gold Coast five-eighth Kane Elgey is determined not to let one bad season ruin his NRL career as he aims to be the local feel-good story which the Titans yearn.Knee and sternum injuries have stalled the 23-year-old's rise since being crowned the club's 2015 rookie of the year.
Displaced last season by now-departed Tyrone Roberts at No.6, Elgey is expected to be given first crack at the post in 2018 by new coach Garth Brennan.
With a year to run on his contract, the Tugun junior wants to remain at his home NRL club and deliver on what the club's new owners and rookie coach have promised.
"I'd love to. I've been here since I was 15 going through the system," he said.
"I struggled a bit last year but one year can't wreck a football player, so it's about getting my confidence up and not letting one bad year ruin me."
Darryl Kelly and Rebecca Frizelle were installed on Friday as the club's new owners, on the back of a bid that preached community engagement.
Brennan has spoken often about prioritising local talent, with Elgey and captain Ryan James two of the current crop able to boast Gold Coast roots.
The playmaker has enjoyed his time under the new coach, with the side due to complete a Toowoomba training camp next week before breaking for Christmas.
"It legit feels like a new club if you ask anyone,' Elgey said.
"We've been doing lots of game-related training, keeping it competitive and we are all proving ourselves again.
"But I've always been one to train hard so that's not stopping me."
