Titans' Taylor seeking Johns NRL wisdom
Dec 20, 2017 - 1:09 AM Ashley Taylor hopes to see a lot more of Matthew Johns around the Gold Coast set-up this season as the young halfback attempts to turn the Titans into a top-eight force.New coach Garth Brennan has invited input from former players since taking his post at the NRL club, with ex-Australian and NSW representatives Johns and Jamie Lyon among those offering to help.
Johns has made a habit of mentoring the country's playmakers, with Australian and Melbourne Storm halves Cooper Cronk and Cameron Munster among those he has worked alongside.
Taylor can now be added to his list of fans after the Newcastle legend popped into training late last month for a brief session with the Titans' halves.
"I'd like him to come back around; the more education we can get the better and he studies the game every week so he's good to learn a bit off," Taylor said of the player-turned television host and rugby league analyst.
"We spoke about where he thinks the game's heading and worked on some things to keep our games developing.
"You see him a lot on TV, but it was the first session we've done together and we learnt a lot."
Taylor recently re-signed with the club until 2021, with Brennan's arrival a big factor given the coach had become a mentor of sorts for the 22-year-old.
"He's met my expectations more with everything; he loves to train hard and we're doing game-related fitness," Taylor said.
"It's a lot of fun and brings the team bond closer."
The Toowoomba product is enjoying life without the constant questions surrounding his future since finalising a deal reportedly worth $3.2 million over three years.
"It's all done and people can stop asking the question of where I'm going to be, at least for the next three or four years," he said.
"A lot could happen (in that time) - we could be a team that wins a premiership next year or in the next five years.
"Hopefully by then we're a genuine top-eight team and consistent in everything we do and having a lot of fun.
"If that all happens then I won't be moving anywhere."
