Real Salt Lake rolls past Revolution

Apr 26, 2009 - 4:06 AM SANDY, Utah (AP) -- There was only one way that Real Salt Lake head coach Jason Kreis could describe his team's dominating victory over the New England Revolution on Saturday night.

Awesome.

Clint Mathis had a goal and an assist as RSL (3-2-0) set team records for goals and shots in a single game during their 6-0 win over the Revolution.

"I think it's very rare in a professional soccer player's life where you can be a part of a match like that where everything was flawless for our team," Kreis said. "There are just so many storylines to talk about and it would be difficult to get them all. But I do want to say that was awesome. It was just fun to be a part of."

The first half may not have been as fun since, although it controlled the game, RSL was unable to take advantage of its many scoring opportunities. That changed when Javier Morales, who assisted on the first two goals, sent a perfect corner kick to Jamison Olave who headed the ball into the net in the 53rd minute.

Then the goals kept coming.

Two minutes later, off another corner kick from Morales, Mathis one-timed the ball beautifully with his left foot to the upper corner of the goal.

"I was just trying to get it on frame and usually in those situations you're not aiming you're just trying to get a good solid hit on it and get it on target," Mathis said.

Mathis set up RSL's third goal, giving Yura Movsisyan a perfect pass that beat the defense and Movsisyan finished by beating New England goalkeeper Brad Knighton in the 70th minute.

Luis Miguel Escalada, who replaced Movsisyan in the two minutes after Movsisyan's goal, scored in the 81st minute and Andy Williams notched a goal on a free kick in the 85th minute.

Robbie Findley rounded out the scoring in the 89th on a breakaway against Knighton.

The six goals surpassed the previous record of 4 set at Colorado on Aug. 9, 2006.

"The tempo of the possession and the pressure we put them under when they had the ball really helped us," Kreis said. "Even in the first half we were creating and creating and creating and you think it's only a matter of time. In the second half obviously the one goal opens up the dam."

RSL applied pressure early to the visitors and outshot the Revolution 8-0 in the first 13 minutes, however only two of those strikes were on goal. Real finished outshooting the Revs 29-6, setting a team record for most shots in any competition, with a 12-2 advantage on goal.

The injury-depleted Revolution (2-1-2) did not create many scoring opportunities as RSL dominated play for most of the game.

"Things caught up with us tonight," said New England head coach Steve Nicol. "At the end of the day we're banged up, we're inexperienced and we made mistakes all around the field."

New England's Jeff Larentowicz had the Revolution's best scoring chance of the night.

The game turned a bit chippy late in the first half after RSL felt that Findley had been taken down in the penalty box in the 43rd minute, however no foul was called. Morales picked up a yellow card for a hard foul less than a minute later and then in the 45th minute New England's Jay Heaps was given a yellow card after he and Olave were involved in a small scuffle as the teams fought for position prior to an RSL free kick.
