Ruiz helps Union top 10-man Vancouver

Mar 26, 2011 - 10:20 PM Chester, PA (Sports Network) - Carlos Ruiz scored in the 77th minute to hand the Philadelphia Union a 1-0 win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday at PPL Park, giving the Union its second win in as many games to start the season.

Following a scoreless first half that saw neither side really create a good offensive chance, Whitecaps striker Eric Hassli received a second yellow card for a foul on Philadelphia's Carlos Valdes in the 58th minute, reducing Vancouver to 10 men.

The Union (2-0-0) almost took advantage eight minutes later when Ruiz sent an overhead kick from close range on target, only for goalkeeper Joe Cannon to make a great reaction save, tipping the ball over the crossbar.

But Cannon was helpless 11 minutes later when a deflected shot from outside the penalty area fell kindly to Sebastien Le Toux, who slid a pass through the face of goal to an open Ruiz for a simple tap in.

Vancouver (1-1-0) won its inaugural game last weekend against Toronto FC, and will look to rebound on April 2 against Sporting Kansas City, while Union goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon has recorded clean sheets in his first two games this season.
