Seattle, Chivas play to scoreless draw
Aug 13, 2011 - 10:11 PM Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Seattle Sounders FC was unable to produce another late goal as it played to a 0-0 draw with Chivas USA at CenturyLink Field on Saturday.Seattle was coming off of a 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City that saw the Sounders nab two injury time goals to claim the victory.
But the Sounders were unable to replicate the dramatic finish Saturday afternoon, as their tilt with Chivas ended without a goal.
Seattle had a golden opportunity take the lead after being awarded a penalty in the 19th minute.
An attempted cross from Alvaro Fernandez struck the arm of Michael Umana and the referee immediately pointed to the spot. Fernandez took the ensuing kick and struck the post. The rebound came back into play but bounced off Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy before trickling out of play.
With both teams searching for a result, the match became much more open in the second half.
Seattle had another great chance to get the lead when Freddy Montero looked certain to bury a bouncing ball in the box, but Umana heroically blocked the shot with a sliding challenge to deny the Designated Player.
Controversy struck the match in the dying minutes when Lamar Neagle was brought down in the box in what appear to be a sure penalty, but the referee signaled for a goal kick after the ball rolled out of play.
The draw gives the Sounders 42 points on the season, tying them for second place in the Western Conference with FC Dallas, who play later Saturday night. Chivas remains in sixth place in the West with 30 points.
Seattle and Dallas meet next Saturday at Pizza Hut Park while Chivas continues its road trip when it faces the Colorado Rapids on August 20th at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
