Oduro helps Crew take down Impact
Jun 16, 2013 - 1:43 AM Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Dominic Oduro scored one goal and assisted on another as the Columbus Crew secured a 2-0 home win over the Montreal Impact, which saw its three-match winning streak come to an end on Saturday.Oduro had a hand in the opener after six minutes as Matias Sanchez scored his first MLS goal, and the former Chicago Fire forward found the net himself in the 22nd.
Montreal entered the match trying to extend its lead at the top of the Eastern Conference with second-place Red Bull New York off this weekend.
The Impact held a one-point lead on New York with four games in hand prior to kickoff, but the Canadian side fell behind early.
Oduro dribbled the ball toward the penalty area and was brought down as he laid the ball off. The referee played advantage and Sanchez cleaned up from there as his shot took a slight deflection on its way past goalkeeper Troy Perkins.
Oduro was denied a great chance in the 16th minute when Perkins produced a nice stop at close range, but he failed to keep out the next opportunity in the 22nd.
The ball was given away in the defensive third by Montreal, and Oduro was able to dash through the middle of the defense and slot his shot inside the right post.
Andrew Wenger squandered a great chance just before halftime for Montreal when he missed the net from seven yards despite having goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum at his mercy.
Felipe Martins came closest to finding the net for the visitors after the break, but he failed to hit the net from a tight angle after rounding Gruenebaum in the 70th minute.
The win is the second for Columbus in the team's last seven matches.
