Whitecaps continue good run with draw at Sporting

Jul 4, 2013 - 3:09 AM Kansas City, KS (Sports Network) - A wonderful free kick from Camilo late in the first half helped Vancouver Whitecaps FC earn a 1-1 draw at Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday.

Aurelien Collin put Sporting in front in the 35th minute, but Camilo responded on the stroke of halftime to force a share of the spoils.

The result continues a good run of form for the Whitecaps, who have earned 10 points from their last four games, while Sporting has drawn four of its last six matches and fails to jump into second place in the Eastern Conference.

Oriol Rosell had the first real chance of the contest in the 24th minute with a powerful shot from outside the penalty area that forced goalkeeper Brad Knighton to parry the shot. Soony Saad was on hand to collect the rebound but he fired wide of the net from a tight angle.

The hosts seized the advantage 10 minutes later when Chance Myers nodded down a cross for Collin, who scored on his second shot after his initial effort was blocked.

But with Sporting on the verge of taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, Camilo stepped forward and scored on a brilliant free kick from 25 yards, bending the ball around the wall and inside the right post, leaving goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen with no chance.

The best opportunity for either side to claim all three points came in the 76th minute when Sporting's Graham Zusi was given a bit of space 17 yards from goal and fired a shot off the post.
