Sturgis, Brown push Rapids past Red Bulls

Jul 5, 2013 - 3:33 AM Commerce City, CO (Sports Network) - The Colorado Rapids picked up a second straight victory on Thursday, defeating Red Bull New York, 2-0, at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

Nathan Sturgis and Deshorn Brown provided the goals to see Colorado (7-7-5) build upon a 4-3 victory over the Montreal Impact in its last outing to improve to 26 points on the season.

New York (8-7-4) remains second in the Eastern Conference on 28 points, dropping its third result of its last four matches.

Following a scoreless opening period at DSG Park with little in the way of scoring opportunities, the Rapids managed to break the deadlock less than two minutes into the second half.

A scramble in the penalty area saw the ball squirt out to Sturgis at the top of the six-yard box, allowing the Rapids midfielder to sweep home his fourth goal of the season.

Colorado doubled its advantage in somewhat controversial fashion in the 68th minute when Chris Klute picked off a pass from Dax McCarty and centered the ball for Brown to tuck home from close range. The Red Bulls defense protested to the assistant referee, adamant that Brown was in an offside position when the ball was played, but the goal ultimately was upheld.
