Strong second half sees Rapids down Timbers

Mar 23, 2014 - 12:15 AM Commerce City, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Vicente Sanchez and Deshorn Brown netted second-half penalty kicks on Saturday to hand the Colorado Rapids a 2-0 win over the Portland Timbers at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

After a scoreless first half in which both sides struggled to create scoring chances, the match roared to life in the second 45 minutes as the hosts took the lead in the 73rd minute.

Brown got free in behind the Portland defense and was clattered in the penalty area by Portland goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts, resulting in a penalty kick and a red card for Ricketts.

Sanchez stepped to the spot and sent backup goalkeeper Andrew Weber the wrong way for his second goal of the season.

Just two minutes later a second penalty was awarded to the Rapids after Weber brought down Sanchez. This time Brown stepped up to take it and fired the strike right into the chest of Weber, but he was able to fire home the rebound.

Portland sent numbers forward late on as the fourth official's board showed six minutes of stoppage time, but the visitors were never able to break down the Colorado back line.
