Revs hold off United to continue winning ways
May 25, 2014 - 2:20 AM Foxborough, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Diego Fagundez scored one goal and assisted on another to propel the New England Revolution to a 2-1 win over D.C. United at Gillette Stadium on Saturday. The win extends New England's winning streak five games, while Patrick Mullins, who netted the opener for the Revs, has scored in four successive contests.
Fabian Espindola had United level with his sixth goal of the campaign in the 73rd minute, but Fagundez netted the winner four minutes later.
A cautious first half that saw few chances gave way to a lively affair in the second half, with Mullins breaking the deadlock in the 55th when he fired a loose ball into the roof of the net after some good work from Fagundez.
Cristian Fernandez set up the equalizer with a cross that picked out Espindola, who entered the game 13 minutes earlier and fired home the tying goal.
But the home side restored its advantage four minutes later with Fagundez scoring on a cross from Teal Bunbury.
United was reduced to 10 men eight minutes from time when Eddie Johnson kicked out at New England's Kelyn Rowe, earning himself a straight red card.
However, the win wasn't safe until the closing moments as substitute Steve Neumann had to clear a header from Cristian off the goal line to preserve the victory.
