Seattle holds off Fire to stay hot
Jun 8, 2014 - 2:45 AM Bridgeview, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Obafemi Martins had an eventful 42 minutes for Seattle Sounders FC as he scored two goals and was sent off in a 3-2 win over the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park on Saturday.Martins scored in the 31st and 38th minutes, while Chicago was reduced to 10 men after a red card for Jhon Kennedy Hurtado.
But after Harrison Shipp scored in the 41st for Chicago to make it 2-1, Martins was sent off after he struck Benji Joya away from the play.
Lamar Neagle made it 3-1 for the Sounders in the 78th, and the team was able to hold on after Shipp scored another for the Fire eight minutes from time.
Seattle owns three wins and a draw from its last four matches, while Chicago is winless in its last four contests.
Martins was active early in the game and he nearly scored after five minutes when he rounded goalkeeper Sean Johnson and failed to put his shot on goal from a tight angle.
He scored his first goal in the 31st from a cross by Brad Evans, while his second came from the penalty spot after he was fouled by Hurtado, earning the Chicago defender his second yellow card.
But Shipp pulled the Fire back into the match with a nice individual run that was capped by a rocket past goalkeeper Stefan Frei.
Martins was sent off following the goal, leaving both sides with 10 men for the rest of the match.
Frei made a pair of quality saves to keep Seattle in front, and Neagle stretched the lead in the 79th when he scored after a chipped pass from Marco Pappa.
Shipp scored again eight minutes from time to make it 3-2, but Frei produced a fine stop on Juan Luis Anangono in the closing minutes to preserve the win.
