Revs draw Impact to clinch playoff berth

Oct 11, 2014 - 10:09 PM Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - The New England Revolution secured a playoff berth on Saturday by claiming a point from a 2-2 draw with the Montreal Impact at the Stade Saputo.

Marco Di Vaio scored twice in the match with goals on either side of Kelyn Rowe's 16th-minute strike, but it was Lee Nguyen's chip in the 69th minute that granted New England a share of the spoils.

The draw sees the Revs (15-13-4) go level with Sporting Kansas City on 49 points apiece, but New England takes second place by virtue of having one more win.

Montreal took the lead in the 12th minute of Saturday's affair when Di Vaio latched on to a long ball from Callum Mallace and fired a first-time shot off the bounce past Bobby Shuttleworth.

But the Revs answered just four minutes later as Rowe capped a nifty give-and- go with Charlie Davies to get through on goal and slot a shot past Evan Bush.

The two sides remained level until the 39th minute when Di Vaio let a pass from Andres Romero run just past his right shoulder before taking a shot against the grain that struck the post on its way into the back of the net.

New England climbed level once more when Nguyen took a square pass from Scott Caldwell in the 69th minute and chipped a shot over Bush from the top of the penalty area.

It proved to be the last moment of meaningful action in the game as New England closed out the match to secure a spot in the postseason.
