Impact end TFC's postseason hopes with draw
Oct 18, 2014 - 8:32 PM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Toronto FC was eliminated from postseason contention for the eighth straight year on Saturday as the club was held to a 1-1 draw by the Montreal Impact at BMO Field.Warren Creavalle put TFC in front after 20 minutes, but Felipe Martins canceled out his opener in the 39th, and TFC was unable to find the winning goal that would have kept them in the hunt for a playoff spot.
The result means that the Columbus Crew have now clinched the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, with Toronto having claimed just one point from its last four games.
Knowing that anything less than all three points wouldn't be enough, Toronto got off to a good start as a deflected shot from Luke Moore fell to Creavalle at the back post, where he placed a volley inside the right post to put the hosts ahead.
Moore almost made it 2-0 to TFC when his goal-bound header was blocked by Matteo Ferrari on its way into the net, and Montreal equalized three minutes later through Felipe, who fired a first-time shot into the top corner of the net from the edge of area after Andres Romero laid off the ball.
Jack McInerney came within inches of putting the Impact ahead in the 53rd minute when he timed his run perfectly, took down a pass from Felipe and fired a shot off the crossbar.
Gilberto wasted a good opportunity for Toronto in the 70th when his free header from seven yards failed to hit the target, while TFC played up a man in the 82nd when Montreal's Heath Pearce was sent off for a poor challenge on Dominic Oduro.
But Toronto was unable to take advantage, and both sides had a player sent off in stoppage time, bringing a frustrating end to Toronto's season.
