RSL holds off Fire to snap winless streak

May 9, 2015 - 9:04 PM Bridgeview, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Real Salt Lake snapped a five-game winless skid on Saturday as goals from Alvaro Saborio and Luke Mulholland helped the club to a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park.

Saborio struck in the 13th minute and Mulholland doubled the advantage in the 56th. Chicago applied some heavy pressure to RSL over the final 20 minutes, but the Fire could only manage a penalty kick from Jeff Larentowicz in the 88th minute, leaving the club with back-to-back defeats following a three-game winning streak.

Jordan Allen had a hand in both goals for RSL, and he set up the first in the 13th minute for Saborio, who took a pass at the top of the box from Allen and drove a low shot past goalkeeper Sean Johnson.

Lovel Palmer nearly equalized just before the break for the Fire when he got under a corner kick and sent the ball just over the crossbar.

Devon Sandoval played provider on the second goal in the 56th when he was played into the penalty area by Allen before laying a ball off for Mulholland, who scored on a sliding effort.

Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando made a fantastic stop with 20 minutes to play on Kennedy Igboananike, while Shaun Maloney curled a shot just wide as the Fire turned up the pressure.

Maloney was brought down by Elias Vasquez inside the box, allowing Larentowicz to score from the spot. However, the goal came too late and Salt Lake managed to hold on for all three points.
