NYC snaps winless skid as Mullins leaves it late
Jun 7, 2015 - 1:11 AM Chester, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - New York City FC snapped an 11-game winless streak on Saturday as a goal from Patrick Mullins in the 87th minute lifted the club to a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park.C.J. Sapong fired the Union in front in the 46th minute, but a wonderful strike from Thomas McNamara leveled the contest in the 53rd before Mullins hammered home the winner to give NYC its first road victory of the campaign.
After each team struggled to create quality scoring chances in the opening 45 minutes, Sapong struck just after the restart when a corner kick from Cristian Maidana fell to him 12 yards from goal, allowing the forward to roll home a shot just inside the left post.
The lead lasted just seven minutes, however, as McNamara found space 30 yards from goal to lash a shot into the upper corner, leaving Union goalkeeper Brian Sylvestre with little chance.
Sebastien Le Toux forced a nice diving save from NYC goalkeeper Josh Saunders when his deflected effort was heading toward the bottom corner of the net.
And with three minutes to play Mullins struck the winning goal as he held off a defender and drove a shot past Sylvestre at his near post.
