Rivero scores late to help 'Caps edge Orlando
Mar 22, 2015 - 1:51 AM Orlando, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Vancouver Whitecaps FC scored at the death at the Citrus Bowl on Saturday to steal a 1-0 victory over Orlando City SC.It looked as if the two sides would share the spoils, but Octavio Rivero struck in the fifth minute of stoppage time to seal a dramatic victory for the 'Caps.
The best scoring chance of the opening period fell to Vancouver in the 34th minute when Rivero broke free on goal off of a pass from Pedro Morales, but Donovan Ricketts came charging off his line to force an early shot from the Whitecaps striker that trickled just wide of the post.
Orlando, which claimed points in its last two outings thanks to second-half goals, made a late push to steal all three points.
The hosts came within inches of grabbing a late lead when Cyle Larin found himself one-on-one with David Ousted, but the Whitecaps goalkeeper denied the Orlando City striker to keep the match scoreless.
It proved to be a pivotal stop as the 'Caps made the most of a searching free kick deep into stoppage time to claim the win.
Morales delivered the set piece to the near post where Rivero was arriving to nod the cross past Ricketts with a glancing header, giving the Whitecaps striker his third goal in as many games.
