Dynamo rally past FC Dallas
Jun 4, 2007 - 2:50 AM HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Bragging rights in the Lone Star State belong to the Houston Dynamo for the moment.Ricardo Clark and Joseph Ngwenya each scored their first goals of the season in the second-half as the Dynamo defeated in-state rival FC Dallas, 2-1, on Sunday at Robertson Stadium in Houston.
The victory ended a three-game losing streak for Houston, which beat FC Dallas in the first of four meetings between the teams this year.
"I thought we were by far the better team early on in the game and deserved to be one nil up," FC Dallas coach Steve Morrow said. "In the second half we just didn't come out. We started the second half very, very flat very disappointed with our second half display. Lacked a lot of character, determination."
The defending MLS champion, Houston (3-5-1) has stumbled out of the gate this year. However the team may be on its way back after upsetting FC Dallas (5-5-1), which is first in the Western Conference.
Trailing, 1-0, after one half, Houston knotted the game in the 51st minute when Clark took a pass from Brian Mullan and beat goalkeeper Dario Sala with a shot to the right side of the net.
Ngwenya gave Houston its first lead in four games in the 66th minute when he gathered a pass from Corey Ashe near the top of the goal box and beat Sala, who had come out of net to cut off the angle. Clark received an assist on the tally.
Both Clark and forward Brian Ching will miss the next month as they depart to play for the U.S. National Team.
Abe Thompson scored his first goal of the season in the 32nd minute to account for the FC Dallas' only tally. Kenny Cooper and Dax McCarty earned assists on the goal.
Houston netminder Pat Onstad made five saves before receiving a red card in the 78th minute for a denied goal scoring opportunity foul. Zach Wells replaced him in goal but did not have to make a save, as Houston played the remainder of the game down a man.
