Magee's late tally sends Red Bulls past Earthquakes
Apr 27, 2008 - 10:41 PM EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The San Jose Earthquakes took a two-year hiatus from the MLS. Mike Magee probably feels like it has been that long since he last scored a goal.Magee scored on a penalty kick in the 79th minute to send the New York Red Bulls to a 2-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday.
Jozy Altidore added another tally in stoppage time for the Red Bulls (2-1-1), who matched their season high in goals.
Following the 2005 season, San Jose halted operations and saw its roster form the Houston Dynamo. It wasn't long after that occurrence - July 22, 2006, to be exact - that Magee scored his 18th career goal.
"(It) feels longer, a lot longer," Magee said when informed how long it had been since he scored a goal. "You have no idea. I'm shaking right now. (It's been a) really long and tough road for me - a lot of ups and downs and injury problems - and to finally get a goal, it kinda makes all the rehab and the time spent on the bicycle worth it."
After Altidore was tripped inside the penalty area by San Jose defender Ryan Cochrane, Magee followed with a right-footed kick off the set piece that beat goalkeeper Joe Cannon for the first score of the contest.
"Oh no, Mike deserves it," Altidore said when asked if he was reluctant to give Magee his penalty kick opportunity. "He has worked so hard and he deserved the chance. I think you're going to see a lot more from him in the future."
Altidore erased any doubt in the 95th minute with his second goal of the season.
Jon Conway recorded just two saves for the Red Bulls. Cannon turned away four shots for the Earthquakes (1-3-0).
"I am pleased with the result, and what pleases me the most is we managed to keep a clean sheet with a good response in the second half to individual players that I had something to say (to) halftime," Red Bulls coach Juan Carlos Osorio said. "In the end ... we were the better team with the better options and we deserved three points."
