Final
Dynamo 3, FC Dallas 1
Jun 14, 2009 - 4:08 AM By AMIT KALUSKAR STATS MLS CorrespondentFRISCO, Texas (STATS) - No matter who wears the orange Dynamo jersey, the result stays the same.
Cam Weaver, playing for the injured Brian Ching, scored two goals to lead the Houston Dynamo to a 3-1 victory over FC Dallas on Saturday night, extending their unbeaten streak to 10 games.
"When one players steps out another steps in," said Weaver. "When you have that depth it shows."
Weaver, acquired from San Jose on Tuesday, has two goals and an assist in two games for Houston. Ching was Houston's leading scorer the last three seasons and missed his second straight MLS game with a left hamstring strain he suffered while with the U.S. National Team on June 2nd.
Richard Mulrooney also scored for the Dynamo (8-2-3), who won their fifth straight and moved into a tie with idle Chivas USA atop the Western Conference. Chivas plays at Columbus on Sunday.
FC Dallas (2-7-4) saw its four-game unbeaten streak snapped despite outshooting Houston 14-11.
In the 63rd minute, Weaver notched his first career multigoal game by converting a right-footed shot into the right corner from 12 yards to stretch Houston's lead to 3-0.
He scored the game's first goal in the 13th minute from the top of the goalie's box. Brian Mullan setup the score from outside the penalty box, where he sent a cross to a streaking Weaver. Despite being tangled with Dallas defender Drew Moor, Weaver managed to knock the ball into the center of the net.
"His production has been great - two goals in two games and he's thrown in an assist," Houston coach Dominic Kinnear said of Weaver. "He's always around the box and attacks the ball well. He's aggressive from 10-12 yards in. So far so good."
Weaver would have had a hat trick if he could have converted in the 55th minute with two shots on goal in less than 5 seconds, but Dallas goalkeeper Ray Burse deflected Weaver's header and then batted away Weaver's rebound shot while still lying on the ground.
"I wish I had that one back," Weaver admitted. "If I get an opportunity like that I'm going to nail that, especially as a striker."
Mulrooney scored the other Houston goal in the 37th minute for his first goal of the year. He played in place of midfielder Ricardo Clark, who is with the U.S. National Team for the Confederations Cup in South Africa.
"Come the summer injuries, suspensions and callups are going to happen, you know you're going to be missing players and having this kind of depth is priceless," Mulrooney said.
Moor scored in the 67th minute with a header from close range. It was the first goal allowed by the Dynamo in 373 minutes since a 3-1 win over San Jose on May 23.
"It's tough to give up an early goal and win," Moor said. "The goal seemed to give us a little bit of life for the final 15 minutes but it might have been too little too late."
