FC Dallas-Galaxy Preview
Sep 11, 2009 - 10:05 PM By KATE HEDLIN STATS WriterFC Dallas (6-11-6) at Los Angeles (9-4-11), 10:30 p.m. EDT
While they have one of MLS' top scorers and one of the most prominent players in the world, it's the Los Angeles Galaxy's defense that has been most impressive recently.
Following a third consecutive shutout, the Galaxy look to extend their unbeaten streak Saturday when they host FC Dallas.
Los Angeles (9-4-11) resumes play for the first time in two weeks, looking to move past Houston for the Supporters' Shield lead. The Galaxy, who began the season with one win in their first 11 games, are 7-1-2 since late June, winning two of their last three while not allowing a goal in those matches.
David Beckham provided the only offense in a 1-0 win over Chivas USA on Aug. 29, scoring his first goal since rejoining the Galaxy on July 16. Donovan Ricketts didn't see much action, meanwhile, facing three shots on goal. Ricketts has needed to make six saves to preserve the three shutouts.
"It's always good to keep a clean sheet, it gives the team confidence," he said, "and it gives us a foundation. So, it is always good."
Ricketts has helped the Galaxy cope with a bit of an offensive slump. Los Angeles has scored three goals in three games and is one of the Western Conference's lowest-scoring teams despite having received 10 goals from Landon Donovan.
Donovan has been moved from striker to midfield with the return of Beckham, playing in his seventh game since returning from AC Milan.
While the Galaxy are looking to Donovan and Beckham to help provide a little more breathing room for Ricketts, coach Bruce Arena has no complaints about the low-scoring affairs.
"To make a real team, you have to win games 1-0," he said. "I was a part of a 5-4 game when I was with the New York Red Bulls and it was maybe one of the worst games I've ever been a part of. ... We have to learn to play in games like this and we have."
Dallas (6-11-6), in second-to-last place in the West, is winless in its last three. After losing to Columbus and New York, the club played to a disappointing 2-all draw against D.C. last Saturday.
United rallied from two deficits and scored on a penalty kick in the 58th minute after defender Daniel Torres was issued a red card for supposedly taking down a D.C. player in the penalty area. Replays showed he never touched the player.
The loss soured what was a big game for Jeff Cunningham, who moved into a tie with Ante Razov for second place on the league's all-time goal list with 114.
"I still haven't thought much about that," he told Dallas' official Web site. "There is still much disappointment. The game is still fresh in my mind."
Looking to improve on one of the conference's worst scoring defenses, Dallas signed U.S. national team defender Heath Pearce on Friday after he spent two seasons with Hansa Rostock in Germany.
The 25-year-old from Modesto, Calif., has made 28 appearances for the national team, seven in World Cup qualifiers.
These teams played to a 1-all tie in Dallas on May 23. The Galaxy are 17-4-3 in the series at home, going 9-1-1 at The Home Depot Center.
