Revolution-Sounders Preview

Jun 4, 2010 - 6:29 PM By MATT BEARDMORE STATS Writer

New England (3-6-2) at Seattle (3-5-3), 10:30 p.m. EDT

The New England Revolution earned a much-needed win in their last match. A road victory over the Seattle Sounders on Saturday night will give them a big boost heading into the World Cup break.

Sparked by the return of midfielder Shalrie Joseph, who had two assists after missing five games due to personal reasons, New England (3-6-2) snapped a seven-match winless streak with Saturday's 3-2 victory over New York. The Revolution had been shut out in three of their previous four games.

"Tonight we came out, pushing the game trying to get the three points and we got them and we got our work done," Joseph told the Revolution's official website.

New England, though, suffered a major setback when goalkeeper Preston Burpo suffered two fractures in his right leg after running into Red Bulls midfielder Dane Richards in the 34th minute.

With Burpo out for the season, the club activated Matt Reis from the disabled list Tuesday. Reis, the team's top goalkeeper the last six seasons, has been sidelined following offseason surgeries on his left shoulder and knee.

Rookie goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth, though, will likely make his first MLS start as the Revolution play their final league game until June 27 against Chicago.

"Momentum going through (the World Cup break) when we have some time to get guys back (from injury) is important," said midfielder Chris Tierney. "We got a result there last year, so I think we're confident.

"It's always fun to go and play in that atmosphere - it kind of drives us on, so I'm thinking that we're going to get a good result this weekend."

In its first match at Qwest Field, New England won 1-0 on Aug. 20, with Joseph getting the goal. Fredy Montero missed a first-half penalty kick as the Sounders suffered their second and final home loss in 2009.

Seattle (3-5-3) has been far less successful at Qwest Field this season, scoring four goals while posting a 2-3-1 mark. The Sounders also have a Western Conference-low nine tallies while finding the back of the net just twice during their current 1-4-1 stretch.

"We have to be patient but at the same time we have to have that killer instinct," forward Pat Noonan told the Sounders' official website following Saturday's 1-0 loss at Colorado. "Whether it is the last pass, shot, cross, whatever it is we just have to be precise and right now we are just a little bit off and it is costing us goals."

New England has scored four goals while posting a 1-4-0 road record this season.

The Revolution improved to 2-0-0 in this matchup with a 2-1 win over the visiting Sounders on Sept. 26. Joseph scored twice for New England while Montero countered for Seattle.
