Chivas USA beats Toronto FC 3-0

Oct 10, 2010 - 5:33 AM CARSON, Calif. (AP) -- Jorge Flores, Jesus Padilla and Rodolfo Espinoza scored in the second half to give Chivas USA a 3-0 victory over Toronto FC on Saturday night.

Zach Thornton made three saves for his sixth shutout as Chivas USA (8-15-4) broke a three-game losing streak. Toronto FC (8-13-7) lost its third consecutive game.

"We did a good job of mixing up our attack," Chivas USA defender Jonathan Bornstein said. "We went down the sidelines to get some crosses in, and we did a good job of finding the seams down the middle."

Flores began the scoring in the 51st minute by leaning to poke Espinoza's right-wing cross into the net from four yards. The goal was Flores's first since May 31, 2008.

"We were patient," Espinoza said. "In other games, we started off well but once we gave up a goal, the team fell apart. Tonight we stayed organized and were consistent."

One minute after Flores scored, Thornton prevented the tying goal by leaping to deflect Dwayne DeRosario's 33-yard shot over the crossbar with his right hand.

"From that point on, we were just too demoralized," Toronto goalkeeper Stefan Frei said. "We let our heads drop and that was the end of it."

Chivas USA defender Michael Umana kept Toronto scoreless in the 73rd minute by clearing Maicon Santos' 17-yard shot off the goal line with Thornton out of position.

Padilla made it 2-0 in the 88th minute with a 28-yard shot that bounced inside the right post. Espinoza scored his first goal with a 21-yard shot in the 90th minute.

Toronto had to play with 10 men after the 79th minute. Toronto used all of its available substitutions before injured defender Adrian Cann had to go to the locker room.

DeRosario received a yellow card in the 81st minute and will be suspended for the Oct. 16 game against Columbus.
