Early goals propel D.C. United over Toronto FC

Apr 17, 2011 - 1:46 AM Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Chris Pontius and Charlie Davies scored in the opening 10 minutes and D.C. United defeated Toronto FC, 3-0, on Saturday night at BMO Field in Major League Soccer.

Pontius scored his first goal of the year in the fifth minute and Davies added his league-leading fifth in the 10th minute for United (2-2-1), which won for the first time since opening week. Pontius added another goal in the 73rd.

Toronto (1-2-3) lost for the first time since its season opener, ending a span of four matches - three draws and a win - without a loss.

Pontius took advantage of a turnover to score the opener, driving into the box on the left side before firing a left-footed shot to the far post past Toronto goalie Stefan Frei.

United added its second goal five minutes later after Josh Wolff forced a save from Frei, who sent a deflection toward Davies on the right. Davies slid in to beat a defender to the ball and scored inside the right post from 12 yards.

Pontius scored his second goal in the closing stages when he made a great cut to open space and fired inside the far post to clinch a huge road victory for United. Fred assisted on the final goal.

D.C. will try to build on the win Thursday when it hosts Red Bull New York and Toronto FC will try to rebound April 23 when it hosts the Columbus Crew.
