Bunbury's late goal salvages draw for KC against Revs

Jul 31, 2011 - 3:02 AM Kansas City, KS (Sports Network) - Sporting Kansas City waited until the 89th minute to extend its unbeaten streak to 13 games on Saturday at Livestrong Sporting Park.

The New England Revolution had taken a first-half lead through Rajko Lekic, but with the Revs reduced to 10 men after a red card to A.J. Soares, Teal Bunbury fired home the equalizer in the closing minutes to help Sporting salvage a 1-1 draw.

It was not the most impressive first-half performance from Sporting as the club created just one decent scoring chance, which came early on when C.J. Sapong shot wide of the net from close range.

A mistake in defense then allowed the Revs to take the lead as a long ball from the back by goalkeeper Matt Reis was allowed to skip past the back line and find Lekic, who easily slotted his shot past goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen.

But Kansas City coach Peter Vermes saw his side turn up the pressure in the second half as Jeferson went close with a shot from inside the area before Reis made a nice kick save on a shot to deny Sapong.

Kei Kamara then headed the ball over the net from six yards in the 82nd minute, but things got a bit easier when Soares was sent off for bringing down Sapong 20 yards from goal while being the last man.

The Revs were on the back foot for the final seven minutes, but they finally cracked in the 89th when Omar Bravo's deflected cross fell kindly into the path of Bunbury, who rolled the ball inside the far post to claim a point.

New England will be disappointed to have conceded the late goal, but coach Steve Nicol has to be pleased with the fact that his team was able to come away from a three-game road trip with five points.
